Telly Gold: Creative that Empowers Consumers to Smile
The real power of these commercials comes from the emotional connection they make through their very human stories. Because when you get someone to smile, they are far more likely to listen to what you have to say. For the most part, local utilities and government services are not things people think about in the most positive way. They only really become top of mind when the power goes out or when the bills are due. And yet, every one of us relies on these companies and government agencies every minute of every day. The question for us was how to turn what are perceived as large bureaucratic companies and agencies into brands that people see in a positive light (if you’ll pardon the energy pun!).
“In the face of a year like no other, Marketsmith has continued to defy the limitations of our new world, in continuing to create compelling and engaging work”, says Telly Awards Executive Director Sabrina Dridje. “This year’s submissions doubled down on what we
already know about the industry. Creativity cannot be stopped. Collaboration will always prevail. New ideas and stories will always find a way to break through to an audience.”
Telling Real Stories That Make People Think
For us, that answer comes down to one simple premise: telling human stories. If people perceive these entities as large impersonal entities, their advertising needs to be personal. Companies like PSEG Long Island, PSE&G New Jersey, and agencies like the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities do large and important projects that have major impacts on their regions and states. But the best storytelling makes those grand efforts relatable on an individual level.
And it was certainly essential to let the people of New Jersey know that their state government was behind numerous efforts to create a cleaner environment through greener sources of energy. But it was the wonder felt by a young girl catching fireflies in her own backyard that turned those facts into a story people will remember.
